Self hypnosis is a state of hypnosis achieved through your imagination and through giving yourself suggestions.

Anyone can learn to self hypnosis. Like any skill it is a question of practice. The more you practice, the deeper you will go, the more relaxation you will experience and the better you will feel.

Self hypnosis is completely safe, though you should not practice it whilst driving or operating machinery.

If you fall asleep during hypnosis you will naturally wake up.

Below you will find instructions on how to do it.

Self hypnosis is an exciting adventure. You can use it:

  • For general relaxation
  • For stress control
  • For self healing
  • To overcome habits
  • To become more successful
  • To make more money
  • For fun
  • For personal development
  • For spiritual development

INSTRUCTIONS: Below you will find two methods. Memorise the script or tape it, give yourself undisturbed time, sit in a relaxing chair or lie down, and enjoy yourself.

The first method involves staring at the image below for about 2 to 3 minutes, or until you feel ready to close your eyes.

GIVING YOURSELF SUGGESTIONS IN HYPNOSIS

Observe  the following rules for best success:

Keep it simple

Work on one thing at a time

Suggestions must be phrased in the positive--the unconscious can not understand negatives (I do no smoke = I smoke)

Connect your suggestions to positive images--where possible imagine yourself already with the desired result.

Feel the suggestions to be true.

The unconscious mind takes everything literally (it is like a small child). Be aware of the words you are using and possible misinterpretations.

Say the same thing in several different ways.

Phrase things in the present (the unconscious does not understand the future)

Give your suggestions as commands (the unconscious mind does not respond positively to doubt.

NOTE: For best results, repeat the suggestions for at least 3 or 4 weeks, and then observe the change. If no change happens you may have conflicting beliefs, and should consult a professional hypnotherapsist.

Examples of suggestions:

Increasingly, I find I am more and more relaxed each day, I feel better and better, and my health is improving and my energy is increasing.

I now earn (x amount) of money every year. I am a magnet to money, it simply comes into my life now. I feel successful, and I deserve to live the life I want.

Method 1

Stare at the centre of the above image (or you can try looking directly at one of the swirls) for two to three minutes or until your eyes feel ready to close. As you start, let your eyes defocus, and take 4 or 5 deep breaths. As you breathe out imagine you are breathing out stress, negativity and any worry or problems.

Close your eyes. Then say (silently to yourself): " I will now enter a state of deep relaxation and self hypnosis. Should anything need my attention during hypnosis, I will immediately waken."

Then say, "As I now count down from 10 to 0, with each number, I become more and more relaxed." (say this with concentration)

Then count down as follows, "10, more and more relaxed, 9 more and more relaxed, 8 more and more relaxed, etc)

Whilst counting, imagine the numbers in your mind's eye, and become aware of your body relaxing--feel it relaxing.

When you reach 0, imagine yourself relaxing in a place of your choice, which is safe and peaceful. See it, hear it, feel it and even smell and taste it.

At this stage you can add suggestions (see column on right)

When you're ready to wake up, say, "on the count of five, I will wake up feel calm and relaxed and fully awake and alert."

Then count slowly from 1 to 5 and open your eyes.

Method 2:

Say (silently to yourself): " I will now enter a state of deep relaxation and self hypnosis. Should anything need my attention during hypnosis, I will immediately waken."

Close your eyes, and relax the muscles around your eyes. Use your imagination to imagine that the muscles around your eyes are so relaxed you can no longer open them. Imagine they are stuck together with glue. Then say, "how ever hard I try, and the more I try, my eyes are stuck together." Repeat this 3 or 4 times. Then briefly try to open you eyes and find you can't! (you may need to practice this several times- don't panic when you can't open your eyes--you can easily override this suggestion with your conscious mind.

Then take 3 or 4 deep breaths and feel the stress and tension dissolve from your body.

Imagine a beautiful staircase, with you standing at the top, looking down. Say to yourself, " As I walk down the staircase, whilst counting from 10 to 0, I become more and more relaxed, enter deeper and deeper into hypnosis."

Then walk down the staircase whilst counting.

When you reach the bottom you find yourself in a  beautiful and relaxing place.

Add suggestions here if you wish.

When you're ready to wake up, say:
" Each and every time I enter hypnosis I can relax more deeply."
Then, when you're ready to wake up, say, "on the count of five, I will wake up feel calm and relaxed and fully awake and alert."

Then count slowly from 1 to 5 and open your eyes.

REMEMBER: PROFICIENCY COMES WITH PRACTICE, AND YOU MAY NOT EVEN KNOW YOU ARE IN HYPNOSIS IF YOU ONLY ENTER A LIGHT STATE. YOU WILL RECEIVE BENEFIT THOUGH. IF YOU ENTER A DEEPER STATE YOU MAY FEEL HEAVY OR LIGHT, FEEL AS IF YOU'RE SPINNING, FEEL VERY PEACEFUL, LOSE AWARENESS OF YOUR BODY, OR THINK YOU'VE BECOME ENLIGHTENED.

IT CAN BE USEFUL TO LEARN SELF HYPNOSIS WITH A QUALIFIED HYPNOTHERAPIST, WHO CAN HYPNOTISE YOU AND GIVE YOU POST HYPNOTIC SUGGESTIONS TO ENTER SELF HYPNOSIS.
